A Veteran Game Director's Latest Title That Looks Very Different Yet Expands Upon The Same Ideas.
The acclaimed co-director responsible for a legendary franchise is crafting a new venture to video games. His new project, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the debut of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it draws heavily from the legacy he helped create with a focus on dynamic AI partners.
Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept
Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows an elderly witch, a protagonist who defies typical power fantasies. This central concept came from an interest in re-examining standard narrative tropes.
"Imagine if you lacked the sword or shield? What if your character was somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" asked the creative lead. "This felt incredibly compelling to think about what makes a hero. A hero is about persevering against challenges, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will."
The Reactive Companion: A Spiritual Successor to Ellie
Although this project appears distinct on the surface, its most significant advancement evolves from of the work seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception sprang from a key thought: "What if I could make an AI partner more dynamic and responsive based on player actions?"
The companion creature within this adventure transcends typical AI behavior. It is essentially a toddler which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. To begin with, it investigates its surroundings, potentially leading to unexpected chaos. Subsequently, it enters a playful state. Ultimately, it observes and assimilates to learn how things work.
- For example: If the creature sees the witch solving a puzzle, it learns the motion without knowing the purpose.
- This leads it to start picking up random objects to see where they go, copying the action.
- True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, teaching through experience.
A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative
This complex system aims to foster individualized narrative moments. The director emphasizes that the game functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure instead of a traditionally structured narrative.
"Each effort to insert traditional three-act structure for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," he stated. "The liveliness between these characters lies in the fact that every person who plays will inevitably create unique moments and stories unlike anyone else's."
By prioritizing organic narrative born from interaction, Coven of the Chicken Foot represents simultaneously a refinement and a significant shift from the creator's iconic past work. The project is currently in development for computer systems.
