The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
