Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic comeback victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
